Every Child Deserves to Belong:
Creating a Strong Sense of Connection in Early Childhood
As an early childhood educator and Director, I have learned that one of the most important things we can give a child is a sense of belonging. Before children can fully focus on learning, they need to feel safe, welcomed, and valued
Belonging begins with simple things. Greeting a child by name each morning, listening when they have something to share, recognizing their accomplishments, and giving them opportunities to help in the classroom can make a child feel important and included.
I have seen how children become more confident when they know that their teachers care about them and that they are an important part of their classroom community. Building friendships, working together, sharing ideas, and celebrating each other’s accomplishments all help children develop a sense of connection.
Families are an important part of this process. When teachers and families communicate and work together, children feel supported by the people around them. Sharing information about a child’s interests, strengths, and experiences can help teachers create meaningful connections with each child.
As educators, we may sometimes think that the biggest learning moments come from planned activities. However, some of the most meaningful moments happen during everyday interactions.
A smile, a kind word, a listening ear, or simply letting a child know, “You are important to us,” can have a lasting impact.
Every child deserves to feel that they belong. When children feel seen, heard, respected, and valued, they are more confident to explore, build relationships, and learn.
